Should I become an OT?

Question:

I’m a grade 11 student and my mother says I need to start thinking about careers now because it’s so hard to find a job these days. Not only that, my mother’s best friend, who is an occupational therapist at a hospital, says that I should think about becoming an OT because I get good marks in science and I’m good with people. I feel kind of pressured: it took my mother’s friend more than six years to get her degree and I don’t know if I want to go to school that long. What do you think?

Nursing student doesn’t want to deal with patients

Question:

I am finishing up my first year in a nursing degree program. Although I am still very interested in health care, I feel apprehensive about nursing because of the amount of patient care involved. The truth is I would rather sit in front of a computer than have to deal with a patient. But there are so many jobs out there for nurses. Do you think I should stick it out and try to work on my people skills, or do you any other career suggestions?

Groups for older workers

Question:

I am a 55-year-old woman who has been out of work for nearly three months. I was wondering if there are any over-50 employment self-help support groups, either online or in person, or, for that matter, any job search programs geared to older workers?

The Emerging Financial Literacy Field

Question:

I have worked as a financial planner for a few years and am ready to expand what I do. A friend suggested that I look into facilitating financial literacy workshops. I couldn't find much information on the Internet about this. Do you have any ideas about how I could break into this field?

Work-At-Home Jobs

Question:

I really need some extra money but I have a two-year-old at home and don't want to put her in a daycare. Can you guide me to websites that offer work-at-home call centre positions that are not scams?

Finding a Job in an Art Gallery

Question:

Five years ago, I graduated with a fine arts degree and haven't worked in the field. Although I paint on the side I don't make much money; instead I have mostly survived by working retail. I really want to leave the shoe store I'm working at and think I would prefer working as a gallery assistant. I've looked online but those jobs seem hard to find ... please let me know how I can get my foot in the door.

Long-Time Employee Out of Work

Question:

I have worked for 15 years with the same company which will be shutting down in two months. Despite having held different positions and having been promoted several times I feel that working for so long at one company could be seen as a weakness. How should I represent myself in my resumé and cover letter?

Should I Take a Low-Paying Job?

Question:

I graduated this year with a degree in psychology and I am feeling frustrated and depressed because I still haven't found a full-time job. I plan to go back to school one day to pursue my masters in clinical psychology so I can become a therapist but right now I need some money coming in. I was recently offered a part-time client service representative (CSR) job for a financial company but I don’t know whether to take it as the pay won't cover my expenses. Do you have any advice for me?

Foreign-Trained Social Worker

Question:

I have a Masters in Social Work (M.S.W.) from India and four years of work experience in child protection. My application for the Skilled Workers Program has been approved and I am planning to move to Canada (in the Toronto region) in three to four months. Could you let me know how long it takes to get employment as a social worker and if there is anything I need to do to prepare myself?

How to Make it as a Film/Video Director

Question:

Last year I graduated from a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Integrated Media Program where I found out that I LOVE shooting videos. Since then I unsuccessfully applied to numerous jobs -- everything from video editor to visual merchandiser to helping homeless youth make art. I worked on a couple of film sets for free but the only job I could get that actually paid was selling lingerie. My dream was to become a video or film director but things look bleak and hopeless now. Do you have any suggestions of where to go from here?
